Why There Wasn’t Any April Fools Pranks This Year

It has been a yearly tradition from companies like Google and Microsoft pave the way online and embrace the April Fools Day spirit. Year after year, I’ve come to expect some pranking on properties like YouTube and Bing.

April Fools Day During COVID-19

So why weren’t companies in the spirit this year? Simply put, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, a bunch of PR people deemed it inappropriate. Probably a good call.

But despite the lack of pranks being pulled, I think it would have been good to see some pranks. I think now more than ever we need to find a way to try and cheer each other up. Standing behind a wall and popping out a someone yelling boo was never a great prank anyway. Good pranks have people smile at the end result.

Let’s not kid ourselves. Aprils fools day pranks are nothing more than a fun waste of time (and that’s seems like a good callback to my original entry on this site titled waste of time). But with everyone staying at home (and hopefully to flatten the curve and not because of layoffs), a lot of people are looking to kill time anyway. You can do this by discovering a new hobby or working on the professional career you want to have.

Do Something Productive

I will always advise that people spend their time doing something their passionate about. If you don’t know what you want to spend your free time doing, try and find something new to do. The only real way to find new activities to do is by experimenting doing random stuff.

So if you’re looking to kill some time during COVID, my recommendation is to try and make someone smile or do something productive (or at least semi-productive). You can get started on the latter, continue your time on this site, and learn how to blog at this link.
